At Orthopedic Associates of Northern California (OANC), we believe that access to high-quality healthcare should not depend on where a person lives. Rural communities throughout California face ongoing physician shortages, making it increasingly important to invest in the education and training of future healthcare providers.
That is why OANC is proud to participate in Healthy Rural California, an innovative graduate medical education initiative dedicated to developing the next generation of physicians who will serve rural and underserved communities across the state. Healthy Rural California was created to help address critical healthcare workforce shortages by providing residents with hands-on clinical training and real-world experience in the communities that need them most. The organization’s mission is focused on building a sustainable healthcare workforce while improving access to care in rural regions throughout California.
Through its Family Medicine Residency Program based in Chico, Healthy Rural California provides comprehensive training designed to prepare physicians for the unique challenges and opportunities of practicing medicine in rural settings. Residents gain broad clinical experience while developing the leadership, advocacy, and community-based care skills needed to serve diverse patient populations.
As part of this educational experience, OANC welcomes residents into our practice to gain exposure to orthopedic care and musculoskeletal medicine. During their training, residents work alongside our orthopedic specialists, learning how to evaluate and manage a wide range of orthopedic injuries and conditions. This experience helps future primary care physicians better recognize musculoskeletal problems, understand treatment options, and coordinate patient care with orthopedic specialists when needed.
Orthopedic conditions are among the most common reasons patients seek medical attention. From sports injuries and fractures to arthritis and chronic joint pain, musculoskeletal conditions affect people of all ages and can significantly impact quality of life. By exposing family medicine residents to orthopedic care during their training, we help equip them with valuable knowledge they can take back to the communities they will ultimately serve.
For OANC, participation in Healthy Rural California represents an investment in the future of healthcare across Northern California. Many rural communities face challenges recruiting and retaining physicians. Training residents within these communities increases the likelihood that they will choose to practice in similar settings after graduation, helping expand access to essential healthcare services for future generations. Healthy Rural California was specifically established to strengthen the physician workforce serving rural and underserved communities throughout the region.
We are honored to support this important mission and to contribute to the education of tomorrow’s physicians. By sharing our expertise and providing meaningful clinical experiences, OANC is helping prepare healthcare providers who will make a lasting difference in the lives of patients throughout rural California.
Orthopedic Associates of Northern California remains committed not only to delivering exceptional orthopedic care today, but also to helping build a stronger healthcare system for the future.
