What is Peroneal tendinitis?
Peroneal tendinitis is a condition involving irritation, inflammation, or degeneration of the peroneal tendons, which run along the outside of the ankle and foot. These tendons connect the peroneal muscles in the lower leg to the bones of the foot and play an important role in stabilizing the ankle, supporting balance, and helping the foot move outward during walking and running.
Peroneal tendinitis is a common source of pain along the outer side of the ankle. It frequently affects athletes and physically active individuals, particularly those who participate in sports that involve repetitive running, jumping, cutting, or rapid changes in direction. However, the condition can develop in people of all ages and activity levels.
Peroneal tendinitis most commonly develops as a result of overuse. Repetitive stress placed on the tendons can cause microscopic damage over time, leading to inflammation and pain. Activities that require repeated ankle motion, especially on uneven surfaces, can increase strain on the tendons.
